AI Images Fueling a New Wave of Car Insurance Fraud

At Express Vehicle Contracts, we’re always keeping an eye on how new technology shapes the automotive world — for better or worse. And while AI has brought huge advances in efficiency and innovation, it’s also opening the door to a new kind of car insurance fraud.

Experts are warning that AI-generated images are being used to exaggerate damage and inflate claims. With realistic image tools now freely available online, it takes just seconds to make a minor scratch look like a serious dent — leaving insurers struggling to tell real from fake.

Recent advances in Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) mean fake images can be almost impossible to detect. Fraudsters can now take a photo of a genuine accident and simply ask AI to “add scratches and dents along the door panel,” producing convincing results that deceive insurers.

Zurich Insurance has already reported a surge in tech-enabled scams — from fake repair invoices and falsified engineer reports to photoshopped registration numbers on written-off cars. The insurer warns it’s now possible to “create a fraudulent claim entirely from behind a computer.”

While insurance companies are working hard to spot fake claims, drivers and fleet operators can also help by photographing and recording accident damage immediately after a collision. Quick, honest evidence remains the best defence against digital deception.
