The Smart #2 Is Back! New Electric Two-Seater Promises 180 Miles of Range

The iconic Smart two-seater is making a comeback, and this time it's fully electric, packed with technology and expected to cost less than £20,000.

Small cars could be about to make a big comeback. Smart has unveiled its new #2 electric city car, bringing the spirit of the original two-seat Smart back to Britain's roads with a modern design and a claimed driving range of up to 180 miles.

Revealed at the 2026 Paris Motor Show, the new Smart #2 is designed for drivers who value compact dimensions, easy parking and efficient everyday motoring.

With UK orders expected to open in spring 2027, it could become an interesting option for urban drivers looking to make the switch to electric.

A Return to Smart's Roots

Smart originally built its reputation on producing clever, compact vehicles that were perfectly suited to busy towns and cities.

The new Smart #2 follows that philosophy, offering just two seats and a footprint designed to make navigating narrow streets and squeezing into tight parking spaces much easier.

It will sit beneath the larger Smart #1 and Smart #3 in the manufacturer's electric vehicle range.

Despite its compact proportions, the new model promises a surprisingly practical 305-litre boot, making it suitable for shopping, commuting and everyday errands.

Up to 180 Miles of Electric Driving

The Smart #2 features a 35.8kWh battery, delivering a claimed range of up to 180 miles on a full charge.

Power comes from a rear-mounted electric motor producing approximately 82PS and 130Nm of torque.

While it isn't designed for lengthy motorway journeys, its range should prove more than adequate for many drivers' daily routines, particularly those with convenient access to charging.

Charging specifications include:

  • Up to 65kW DC rapid charging

  • Approximately 20 minutes to charge from 10% to 80% under suitable conditions

  • 11kW AC charging capability

For commuters and city dwellers, those figures could make the Smart #2 a convenient and economical electric runabout.

Three Versions to Choose From

Smart plans to offer three versions of its new electric two-seater.

Pure – The entry-level model is expected to feature a 10.1-inch central touchscreen, an 8.8-inch driver display, adaptive cruise control, lane-centring assistance and vehicle-to-load technology.

Premium – Adds extra comfort and convenience, including a panoramic glass roof, heated seating, two-tone paintwork and an upgraded Sennheiser audio system.

Couture Edition – A limited-edition version offering distinctive alloy wheels with gold detailing, ambient interior lighting, wireless phone charging and additional premium features.

The range aims to combine the simplicity of a small city car with the technology and equipment drivers increasingly expect from modern electric vehicles.

Could the Smart #2 Be an Affordable Electric Car?

One of the most interesting details is the anticipated UK price.

Smart has indicated that the new #2 will start at under £20,000, potentially making it an appealing choice for drivers who want an electric vehicle without the cost or size of a larger SUV.

Final UK prices and specifications are still to be confirmed.

Of course, the two-seat layout won't suit everyone. But for individuals or households looking for a compact second vehicle, the Smart #2 could offer an attractive combination of practicality, efficiency and personality.

When Will the Smart #2 Arrive in the UK?

UK order books are expected to open in spring 2027, with further details on pricing and availability to follow.
