A Chinese automotive giant is about to transform the UK’s EV charging landscape.

BYD has revealed plans to roll out hundreds of its revolutionary 1,000kW ultra-rapid “flash chargers” across the UK—technology capable of adding up to 250 miles of range in just five minutes.

That’s not just fast. That’s game-changing.

The chargers are twice as powerful as the latest V4 Superchargers from Tesla, which currently peak at 500kW and deliver around 172 miles of range in 15 minutes. BYD’s new system pushes charging into a completely different league.

The rollout will begin at BYD’s expanding UK dealership network, which now spans more than 125 showrooms nationwide. From there, the brand is exploring additional partnerships and high-demand locations to ensure the technology is available where drivers need it most.

Speaking about the strategy, BYD UK country manager Bono Ge explained that the company plans to start with around 300 units, carefully monitoring real-world usage before scaling further. The focus, he said, is not just speed—but keeping charging affordable and accessible for consumers.

These flash chargers form a key part of BYD’s Super e-Platform, which combines next-generation batteries, electric motors, and charging hardware into a single integrated system. Even older EVs are expected to benefit, charging 20–30% faster than usual, while the newest BYD models can gain up to 1.2 miles of range per second.

The first vehicle able to fully exploit these extreme charging speeds will come from Denza, BYD’s premium sub-brand launching in the UK this year. The Denza Z9GT EV uses BYD’s latest Blade battery technology, designed specifically to handle the immense power of the flash charging system.

With charging times shrinking to minutes rather than miles of waiting, BYD isn’t just competing in the EV market—it’s redefining what convenience looks like for electric driving in the UK.
