Keep Your EV Charging This Autumn 🍂

Over 1 Million UK Home Chargers Now in Use — But Are They Ready for Winter?

As the chill sets in and the autumn leaves start to fall, keeping your EV charged isn’t just about your car — it’s about your home charger too.

Recent figures show there are now over one million home EV chargers across the UK — powering around 1.6 million electric vehicles by the end of 2024. But while most of us check our tyres, antifreeze, and brakes as the seasons change, few remember to give the charger itself a little TLC.

According to Start Rescue, a leading UK breakdown service, many EV owners who think their car won’t charge actually have an issue with the charger, not the vehicle.

“Our recovery specialists often see drivers worried that their EV isn’t charging,” explains Lee Puffett, Managing Director of Start Rescue. “Quite often, the issue is with the charger rather than the car itself. Including charger maintenance in your autumn car checks can save a lot of hassle later.”

⚡ Simple Tech Tips to Keep Your Charger in Top Shape
Follow these easy steps to ensure smooth, reliable home charging all winter long:

1. Inspect Your Charger and Cable
Check for cracks, frayed wires, or corrosion on the connector pins. A quick visual once-over can prevent bigger electrical issues later.

2. Protect Against Moisture and Ice
Keep your charging station area dry and clean. Wipe off rain, snow, or frost before plugging in, and consider a weatherproof cover for extra protection.

3. Check Your Power Supply
Make sure your socket and circuit are in good condition — no loose connections or tripped breakers. Avoid using extension cords (they can reduce charging efficiency and cause overheating).

4. Adjust Charging for Colder Weather
Cold temperatures slow down battery chemistry. If your charger allows, adjust the current and precondition your EV battery before plugging in.

5. Keep Everything Up to Date
Update your charger’s firmware and any related apps. New updates often improve safety, performance, and energy efficiency.

6. Call the Experts When Needed
If you spot wear, damage, or unusual operation, don’t risk it — contact a qualified electrician to inspect and repair the unit safely.

🔋 Why It Matters
A healthy home charger keeps your EV running efficiently, saves you from unexpected downtime, and helps extend your vehicle’s battery life. As more UK drivers go electric, a little seasonal charger care can make a big difference.
