Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI: The Electric Hot Hatch Has Finally Arrived
Volkswagen has officially taken one of the most iconic badges in hot hatch history and plugged it into the future. Meet the new Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI, the first ever all electric GTI and a huge moment for one of the most recognisable performance names in the car world.
For nearly 50 years, GTI has meant sharp handling, everyday usability and that little bit of attitude that makes a small car feel properly exciting. Now, Volkswagen is bringing that same idea into the electric age, with a compact EV that promises punchy performance, clever tech and just enough old school GTI charm to keep the enthusiasts interested.
The First Ever Electric GTI
The ID. Polo GTI is not just another electric hatchback with a sporty badge slapped on the back. Volkswagen is positioning it as the start of a new GTI chapter, using the famous name on an all electric model for the very first time.
Underneath, it uses Volkswagen’s MEB+ platform and sends power to the front wheels, just like a classic GTI should. That is quite important, because instead of trying to reinvent the formula completely, Volkswagen seems to be keeping the core GTI recipe alive: compact size, front wheel drive, strong performance and proper everyday practicality.
It produces 166 kW, which works out at around 226 PS, with 290 Nm of torque available quickly thanks to the electric motor. The result is a 0 to 62mph time of 6.8 seconds, which puts it firmly in warm to hot hatch territory. Quick enough to be fun, but still sensible enough to use every day.

Proper GTI Performance, Just Without The Petrol
One of the biggest questions with any electric performance car is whether it can actually feel exciting. Volkswagen seems very aware of that, because the ID. Polo GTI comes with some serious hardware to help it feel like a proper driver’s car.
As standard, it gets an electronically controlled front axle differential lock, an adaptive DCC sports chassis, progressive steering and 19 inch alloy wheels. That means this is not just about straight line speed. Volkswagen has clearly focused on cornering, grip and the kind of sharp response people expect from a GTI.
There is also a new GTI driving profile, activated by a button on the sports steering wheel. Press it, and the car switches the drive and chassis systems into a more dynamic setup, while the cockpit changes colour and graphics to match the mood. Very dramatic. Very GTI. Very much the sort of thing that will look great in a TikTok review.
Up To 263 Miles Of Range
The new ID. Polo GTI uses a 52 kWh net battery, giving it a provisional WLTP range of up to 263 Miles. Which makes it far more usable than some people might expect from a compact electric performance car.
Charging should be fairly practical too. Volkswagen says the ID. Polo GTI can charge at up to 105 kW DC, taking the battery from 10 to 80 percent in around 24 minutes at a suitable rapid charger. So while this is the sporty one, it still sounds like Volkswagen has remembered that people need to actually live with it.
That could be a big selling point for drivers who like the idea of a hot hatch but also want lower running costs, zero tailpipe emissions and the instant response of an electric motor.
Classic GTI Looks With A Modern Electric Twist
Volkswagen has not forgotten the visual side either. The ID. Polo GTI keeps some of the classic GTI design details, including the famous red stripe across the front, a GTI honeycomb style lower intake, sporty 19 inch wheels and a more aggressive stance.
There is also an illuminated VW badge, IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights and a rear design with a split roof spoiler and black diffuser. In other words, it still wants to look like a GTI, just one that has swapped the exhaust note for an electric whirr.
The design is clean, compact and recognisably Volkswagen. It is not trying too hard, which is probably the right move. GTI models have always worked best when they feel sporty without becoming silly.

The Interior Brings Back The GTI Personality
Inside, Volkswagen has leaned into the GTI heritage nicely. The cabin uses plenty of red and black, with red stitching, a GTI sports steering wheel, premium sports seats and a fresh take on the classic tartan seat fabric.
That tartan-style trim is a smart touch, because it links the ID. Polo GTI back to the original Golf GTI without making it feel like a full retro tribute act. You also get a digital cockpit and a large 12.9 inch infotainment display, but Volkswagen has added a clever little nostalgic feature: a retro display mode inspired by the original Golf.
That means the digital instruments can be transformed to look more old school, while the infotainment system can even show music graphics in the style of a cassette. It is a small detail, but it gives the car a bit more character than your average electric hatchback.
More Practical Than You Might Expect
The ID. Polo GTI might be compact, but Volkswagen says it is actually roomier than the petrol Polo GTI. Thanks to the packaging benefits of the electric platform, passengers get more interior space, while boot space has grown from 351 litres to 441 litres.
Fold the rear seats down and the load capacity increases to 1,240 litres, which is impressive for a small sporty EV. It can even tow up to 1.2 tonnes braked, and the detachable ball coupling can support a bike carrier with two e-bikes.
That makes the ID. Polo GTI more than just a weekend toy. It could be a genuinely useful daily car for drivers who want something compact, quick and practical.
Tech And Driver Assistance
The ID. Polo GTI will also be available with plenty of modern driver assistance systems. Volkswagen has mentioned features such as Connected Travel Assist, which uses online data and can help with assisted driving functions. It can also recognise red traffic lights and bring the car to a stop within the system limits.
There is also one pedal driving, allowing the driver to slow the car down using the accelerator pedal alone in many situations. That is a feature many EV drivers quickly get used to, especially in traffic.
Optional extras include a Harman Kardon sound system, panoramic sunroof, pneumatic massage front seats and performance focused Bridgestone Potenza Sport tyres.
When Is The Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI Coming?
Volkswagen says pre sales are due to start in Germany this autumn, with pricing expected to sit just under €39,000. UK pricing and specification have not been confirmed yet, so we will have to wait a little longer to see exactly how it lands for British drivers.
But one thing is clear: the ID. Polo GTI could be one of the most important small electric performance cars to watch. It brings together a legendary badge, everyday EV usability and proper hot hatch attitude.
Could The ID. Polo GTI Be A Great Leasing Option?
For leasing customers, this could be a very interesting car. Compact electric cars are already becoming more popular, but the ID. Polo GTI adds something extra: personality.
It is not just about getting from A to B. It is about having a car that feels exciting, looks sharp and still makes sense for daily use. With strong performance, a practical range, rapid charging and a more spacious cabin than expected, the ID. Polo GTI could be a brilliant option for drivers who want their next EV to feel a little more special.
