SMART Concept #2: A New Chapter for the Urban Electric Car

The unveiling of the smart Concept #2 marks a significant step forward for smart as it looks to redefine the role of the compact city car. Revealed during the brand’s Global Event in Beijing, the smart Concept #2 provides a clear preview of the next-generation all-electric two-seater, combining premium design, advanced engineering, and a renewed focus on urban mobility.

With production plans already confirmed, this is not just a design exercise. It is a clear indication of where the brand is heading as it continues to expand its global electric vehicle portfolio.

Reinventing the iconic two-seater
smart has long been associated with compact, city-focused vehicles, most notably the fortwo. With the smart Concept #2, the brand is revisiting that formula with a modern, premium approach.

The concept has been developed under the design philosophy “Love, Pure, Unexpected,” led by the Mercedes-Benz Global Design Team. The result is a clean, minimalist exterior enhanced by distinctive details, including a two-tone finish and subtle design elements integrated beneath translucent surfaces.

Rather than focusing purely on practicality, smart is positioning the vehicle as an extension of personal identity, blending function with style in a way that appeals to modern urban drivers.

Compact design, maximised usability
Despite its small footprint, the smart Concept #2 has been engineered to maximise interior space and usability. Measuring just under 2.8 metres in length, it retains the compact dimensions expected of a city car while incorporating a “wheels-at-the-corners” layout to optimise cabin room.

This configuration also contributes to excellent manoeuvrability, with a turning circle of just 6.95 metres. For drivers navigating tight urban environments, this level of agility is a key advantage, making everyday driving and parking significantly easier.

Advanced electric performance
Underpinning the smart Concept #2 is smart’s newly developed Electric Compact Architecture (ECA), a platform designed specifically for next-generation electric vehicles.

The concept outlines a projected driving range of up to approximately 300 kilometres, positioning it as a practical option for both daily commuting and longer urban journeys.

Charging capabilities are equally impressive, with DC fast charging expected to deliver a 10% to 80% charge in under 20 minutes. This ensures minimal downtime and supports the fast-paced nature of city driving.

In addition, the inclusion of Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality allows the car to power external devices, adding a layer of flexibility for both personal and professional use.

A growing global portfolio
The introduction of the smart Concept #2 forms part of a wider expansion strategy for smart. The brand is rapidly growing its model range, building on existing vehicles such as the smart #1, smart #3 and smart #5.

Alongside this, smart also unveiled the smart #6 EHD, marking its entry into the premium fastback sedan segment for the Chinese market. This demonstrates the brand’s ambition to compete across multiple categories while maintaining a consistent design and technology philosophy.

With vehicles now available in around 40 global markets, smart’s continued growth is supported by strong partnerships and a focus on innovation, design, and customer experience.

What happens next?
The production version of the smart Concept #2 is set to make its official debut at the Paris Motor Show 2026 in October. This will mark the transition from concept to reality, bringing the next-generation two-seater to European roads.

As urban mobility continues to evolve, vehicles like the smart Concept #2 highlight the shift towards compact, efficient, and fully electric solutions that do not compromise on design or technology.

Final thoughts
The smart Concept #2 represents more than just a new model. It reflects a broader transformation within the smart brand, combining its heritage in compact mobility with a modern, premium electric future.

For drivers and businesses alike, it signals a growing range of electric options tailored to different needs, particularly within urban environments where efficiency and manoeuvrability remain essential.
