New Audi A6 allroad: the rugged estate returns with serious SUV energy

The Audi A6 allroad is back, and it is still doing what it has always done best: offering big estate car practicality with a bit more attitude, confidence and rough-road capability.

While most drivers are being pushed towards SUVs, Audi has taken a different route with the new A6 allroad. It keeps the long, sleek shape of a premium estate, but adds a tougher exterior design, raised capability and the kind of tech-heavy interior you would expect from a modern Audi.

It is basically the A6 Avant after a weekend in the mountains.

A premium estate with a tougher side

The new Audi A6 allroad has been designed to look more rugged than the standard A6 Avant, without going full SUV. It gets black protective cladding around the body, wider-looking arches, allroad-specific wheels and a more purposeful stance.

Audi describes it as an “all-terrain athlete”, which sounds dramatic, but it does suit the car quite well. This is not just a family estate with some plastic trim stuck on. It is designed to feel more capable on rougher roads, muddy tracks and bad weather, while still being comfortable enough for long motorway journeys.

That is where the A6 allroad has always made sense. It is for people who want SUV confidence, but do not necessarily want SUV bulk.

Adaptive air suspension comes as standard

One of the biggest features of the new A6 allroad is its adaptive air suspension. This allows the car to adjust its ground clearance and damping depending on the road and driving mode.

In normal driving, it should feel smooth, controlled and comfortable. When the surface gets rougher, the suspension can help give the car more clearance and confidence. That makes it more useful than a regular estate if you regularly deal with country lanes, uneven roads, gravel tracks or poor weather.

Audi has also given the car allroad-specific wheels ranging from 19 to 21 inches, along with wide tyres designed to balance comfort with a more capable feel.

Strong diesel power

The standard new Audi A6 allroad comes with up to 299PS, giving it enough performance to feel properly quick for a large estate. Audi lists the 0-62mph time at 5.4 seconds, which is not hanging around.

That is one of the reasons the A6 allroad is such an interesting car. It is practical and sensible on paper, but it still has enough power to feel premium and effortless on the road.

For long-distance drivers, this kind of setup could make a lot of sense. You get the comfort and space of a big estate, the confidence of Audi’s allroad setup, and enough performance to make motorway journeys feel easy.

A new plug-in hybrid option
Audi is also offering the new A6 allroad as an e-hybrid, giving buyers another option if they want a more electrified version.

The A6 allroad e-hybrid starts from £72,920 OTR and offers up to 367PS. That makes it even more powerful than the standard model, with Audi listing a 0-62mph time of up to 5.5 seconds.

This could be the version that appeals most to company car drivers or those who want the flexibility of electric driving for shorter journeys, while still having petrol power available for longer trips.

Big boot, big comfort, big practicality

The A6 allroad is still a proper estate at heart, so practicality is a major part of the appeal.

Audi lists up to 466 litres of luggage space with the rear seats in place, expanding to 1,497 litres with the seats folded down. That means there is plenty of room for family life, work kit, luggage, dogs, golf clubs or whatever else gets thrown in the back.

The e-hybrid version has slightly less maximum boot space, with up to 1,423 litres available with the rear seats folded, but that is still plenty for most buyers.

There is also a maximum towing capacity of up to 2,500kg, which gives the A6 allroad another useful advantage. Whether it is a trailer, caravan or outdoor equipment, this is a car built to do more than just look good outside a coffee shop.

A properly premium cabin
Inside, the new A6 allroad gets the latest Audi interior treatment, with a curved panoramic display across the dashboard, Audi connect features and app store integration.

Vorsprung models also add a second display for the front passenger, bringing entertainment and navigation closer to the passenger seat.

Audi has clearly focused on making the A6 allroad feel calm, refined and high-end inside. Soft-touch materials, ambient lighting and a clean dashboard layout help give it that executive feel.

A panoramic glass roof with a clever party trick

One of the standout interior features on the new Audi A6 allroad is its panoramic glass roof. At first, that might sound like a fairly normal premium car feature, but Audi has given it a clever twist.

Instead of simply having a fixed glass panel, the panoramic roof can switch between fully transparent and opaque sections at the touch of a button. That means you can let more natural light into the cabin when you want that bright, open feeling, or darken parts of the roof when the sun is too strong or you want a more relaxed atmosphere inside.

It is the kind of feature that helps the A6 allroad feel more luxurious without being too flashy. On longer journeys, it should make the cabin feel airier and more spacious, especially for passengers in the back. Then, when you want a bit more privacy or less glare, the roof can adapt without needing a traditional blind.

It also fits the personality of the A6 allroad nicely. This is a car built for comfort, distance and adventure, so having a cabin that can feel open and connected to the outside world makes sense. Whether you are driving through the countryside, heading away for the weekend or just making the daily commute feel a bit less grey, the panoramic glass roof adds a proper premium touch.

Could it tempt people away from SUVs?

That is probably the most interesting question.

The new Audi A6 allroad is not trying to be a massive SUV, and that might be exactly why it stands out. It offers a lower, sleeker shape than many SUVs, but still gives drivers the added confidence of a more capable allroad setup.

For people who want something practical, premium and a little different, this could be a very strong option. It has the space of an estate, the comfort of a long-distance cruiser and the tougher look of something ready for more than just the school run.

Final thoughts
The new Audi A6 allroad feels like a proper reminder that estate cars still have a place, especially when they look this good.

It is practical, powerful, comfortable and more capable than a standard A6 Avant, without falling into the usual SUV crowd. With prices starting from £70,495 OTR, it is clearly aimed at premium buyers, but the combination of space, tech, performance and all-road confidence gives it a very clear identity.

For drivers who want SUV ability without fully joining the SUV crowd, the new Audi A6 allroad could be one of the coolest alternatives around.
