Drivers Can Now Compare Fuel Prices Across the UK – Here’s How It Works
UK drivers can now more easily find the cheapest place to fill up thanks to a new government-backed system designed to increase transparency and competition at the pumps.
The new Fuel Finder Scheme means petrol stations across the country are now required to share their fuel prices in near real time, allowing drivers to compare costs and shop around before they fill up.
What Is the Fuel Finder Scheme?
Under the scheme, all petrol stations and fuel retailers must now report their fuel prices to a central database within 30 minutes of any change. This information is then made available to third-party apps and websites that drivers already use to check fuel prices.
Previously, sharing this data was voluntary. Now, participation is mandatory, meaning motorists can rely on up-to-date information no matter where they are in the UK.
The government estimates the move could save the average household around £40 per year, simply by making it easier to find better prices locally.
Why Was It Introduced?
Investigations into UK fuel pricing showed that competition between petrol stations was often weak, leading to higher profit margins at some forecourts.
Studies also revealed that prices often rise quickly when oil costs increase but fall much more slowly when oil prices drop, meaning drivers weren’t always benefiting from falling wholesale costs.
Motoring groups have also highlighted that drivers can sometimes pay up to 20p more per litre, depending on where they refuel — making price comparison increasingly important.
How Do Drivers Use It?
There isn’t a dedicated government app for the scheme. Instead, the data feeds into popular apps and navigation tools already used by drivers.
Apps and services such as PetrolPrices, Waze, My RAC, the AA app, sat-nav systems and online maps can now access a full and regularly updated pricing database. Drivers simply open their preferred app to see nearby forecourts and compare prices before heading out.
The system also provides information on services available at stations, such as car washes, toilets and air pumps, helping drivers plan stops more conveniently.
Current Fuel Prices
Fuel prices have also eased compared to recent years. According to motoring groups, petrol prices are currently at their lowest point since mid-2021, offering some relief after price spikes seen during 2022 and 2023.
However, prices still vary significantly between locations, making comparison tools increasingly useful for drivers looking to save money.
What This Means for Drivers
For motorists, the benefit is simple: more choice and better visibility of fuel prices. With reliable data now available nationwide, drivers can avoid overpriced forecourts and make smarter refuelling decisions.
As more stations continue submitting live pricing data, finding the cheapest nearby fuel should become even easier — putting pressure on retailers to stay competitive.
And in a time where every pound counts, even small savings per litre can add up over the course of a year.
