630bhp RS5 Marks Audi Sport’s Move into High Performance PHEVs
Audi’s legendary RS performance line is entering a new chapter, and the latest Audi RS5 represents more than just a redesign it marks the natural evolution of the much loved Audi RS4 formula. Combining aggressive styling, enhanced cooling design, and expanded body choices, the new RS5 builds on everything drivers admired about its predecessor while pushing visual drama and road presence even further.
For UK performance fans, there is another major headline too: the return of the RS saloon for the first time in nearly two decades.
From RS4 Roots to RS5 Evolution
The RS4 has long been known as the perfect blend of everyday usability and serious performance. Audi’s approach with the RS5 is not to abandon that identity, but to refine and amplify it.
This new generation carries forward the same performance philosophy practicality paired with unmistakable RS aggression while introducing sharper design language and a more expressive character. The RS5 feels like a natural progression, evolving the RS4’s DNA into something more modern, more dramatic, and more emotionally engaging.
A Redesigned Front End with Purpose
The clearest visual difference arrives at the front, where Audi has introduced a dramatically reworked fascia dominated by an expansive black mask grille.
This bold design does more than create road presence. The enlarged grille improves airflow and cooling efficiency for the V6 engine and its supporting electrical systems, ensuring consistent performance under demanding driving conditions.
New lighting signatures further distinguish the RS5. Both the daytime running lights and rear brake lights now feature a chequered flag graphic effect, a subtle nod to Audi Sport’s motorsport heritage and a detail that sets the car apart instantly at night.
Exhaust Design That Matches the Attitude
At the rear, Audi has embraced pure performance theatre.
One of the defining RS5 features is the pair of enormous in board tailpipes, each large enough to fit a fist through. These oversized exhaust outlets were intentionally designed to reflect the extreme personality of the car.
Audi designer Seebers explained that the team explored multiple sizes before committing to the final look, balancing boldness with proportion. The result is a rear design that leaves no doubt about the RS5’s performance intentions even when standing still.
The RS Saloon Returns to the UK
Alongside the Avant estate, Audi will introduce an RS5 saloon to the UK market for the first time since the B7 generation launched in 2006.
Although initially developed with North American buyers in mind, Audi recognised growing demand for greater variety within its RS range. The sleeker and more rakish proportions of the new RS5 made it the ideal candidate to reintroduce a four door saloon option.
This gives drivers a clear choice between the practicality of the Avant estate and the classic sporting silhouette of a performance saloon, both carrying the same RS pedigree.
A More Expressive Future for Audi Sport
The latest RS5 shows Audi leaning further into emotional design without losing the everyday usability that made the RS4 such a success. Every element from the cooling focused front end to the motorsport inspired lighting and dramatic exhaust design works together to create a car that feels both familiar and entirely new.
By evolving the RS4’s winning formula rather than replacing it, Audi has created a performance car that respects its heritage while confidently moving forward.
For enthusiasts, the RS5 is not just another update it is the next step in a performance lineage that continues to define fast, usable everyday cars.
