New Denza Z Electric Supercar Could Bring 1,582bhp And 217mph To Europe

China’s luxury EV game just got very serious
Just when you thought electric cars could not get much quicker, louder in the numbers department, or more dramatic, along comes the Denza Z.

This is not your normal sensible EV with a big screen and a quiet cabin. This is a 2+2 electric roadster with supercar power, luxury grand tourer style and enough performance to make some of Europe’s most famous badges start looking over their shoulder.

Denza, the premium brand backed by BYD, has revealed more details about its new flagship electric supercar through Chinese regulatory filings. The headline figure is absolutely ridiculous in the best possible way: 1,582bhp.

Yes, really.

A 0 to 62mph time that belongs in hypercar territory
Denza has previously claimed the Z will be capable of sprinting from 0 to 62mph in under two seconds. That puts it in the same conversation as some of the fastest electric hypercars in the world, including the Rimac Nevera.

The top speed is just as wild. In standard form, the Denza Z is expected to reach 186mph, but with an optional sporting package, that figure rises to a claimed 217mph.

That package also adds a large rear spoiler, giving the car a more aggressive look and helping it unlock its full performance potential. In other words, this is not just a pretty electric convertible. It is a seriously powerful machine with numbers that sound more like something from a video game.

Big power, big weight, big presence
The Denza Z will be offered as either a soft-top roadster or with a metal roof. According to the details disclosed, the soft-top version weighs around 2,650kg, while the metal roof model comes in slightly lighter at around 2,580kg.

That is heavy, but not unusual for a high-performance electric grand tourer packed with batteries, motors and luxury technology. The clever part is how Denza plans to make all that weight feel controlled.

The Z uses three electric motors, with two at the rear and one at the front. It also features advanced chassis technology, including steer-by-wire and DiSus-M magnetorheological suspension, which is also used on BYD’s wild Yangwang U9 hypercar.

That suspension system can prepare the car for changes in the road surface before they fully hit the wheels, helping improve comfort, control and performance. It is the sort of technology that shows just how far Chinese EV engineering has come in a very short space of time.

Designed with proper supercar drama
The Denza Z was shaped under BYD chief designer Wolfgang Egger, whose previous work includes the stunning Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione. That is a pretty strong name to have attached to a luxury performance car.

The design stays close to the concept car, with smooth bodywork, a low roadster stance and a cab-forward shape that gives it a dramatic, futuristic look. It manages to look premium without being too fussy, which is exactly what a car like this needs.

Inside, the concept version showed a much brighter and more expressive cabin than most BYD-related models. Turquoise and yellow upholstery gave it real show car energy, while exposed carbon fibre in the centre console and seat backs reminded everyone that this is still meant to be a serious performance machine.

Interestingly, the Z also appears to use some physical controls, including switches that look like they may control drive modes and suspension settings. In a world where everything is being buried inside touchscreens, that is actually quite refreshing.

A Chinese rival to Europe’s luxury performance cars
On paper, the Denza Z looks like a potential rival to cars such as the Maserati GranCabrio Folgore. That alone tells you how ambitious Denza is being.

This is not a brand trying to quietly sneak into the premium EV world. It is coming in with a 1,582bhp electric roadster, a claimed 217mph top speed and a European launch plan.

That last part is especially interesting. Denza is expected to launch the Z in Europe before it goes on sale in China, which is a major statement. Europe has long been dominated by premium British, German and Italian brands, especially when it comes to luxury performance cars. Denza clearly wants to prove that it belongs in that conversation.

What could it cost?
Denza has not confirmed pricing yet, but this will not be cheap. Its closest rival on paper, the Maserati GranTurismo Folgore, starts from around £180,000, giving us an idea of the kind of territory the Z may be heading towards.

However, Denza could choose to undercut more established luxury brands to make a stronger first impression in Europe. Its new Z9 GT is expected to sit around the £100,000 mark when it arrives, so the Z will almost certainly cost more than that, but perhaps still less than some of the traditional super-GT names it wants to challenge.

Why the Denza Z matters
The Denza Z is not just exciting because it is fast. It matters because it shows how quickly the electric performance market is changing.

A few years ago, Chinese car brands were mostly discussed in terms of affordability, battery technology and value. Now, brands like Denza are aiming directly at luxury performance cars from Maserati, Porsche, Mercedes-AMG and beyond.

That does not mean every driver is suddenly going to be choosing a 1,582bhp electric roadster, of course. But technology from flagship cars often filters down over time. Advanced suspension, smarter electric motor control, improved battery systems and premium EV design could all influence future models that are far more accessible.

So while the Denza Z might be a dream car for most people, it still gives us a very real glimpse of where electric cars are heading.

Final thoughts
The Denza Z sounds absolutely outrageous, and that is exactly why it is so interesting.

With 1,582bhp, a claimed 0 to 62mph time of under two seconds and a possible 217mph top speed, it is clear that Denza is not playing around. This is a car built to get attention, challenge expectations and prove that China’s premium EV brands are ready to take on some of the biggest names in Europe.

Whether it can win over buyers who usually look to Maserati, Porsche or Mercedes-AMG remains to be seen. But one thing is obvious: the electric supercar world is getting a lot more interesting.

And if this is what Denza is bringing to Europe first, we are very curious to see what comes next.
